The department of Otolaryngology at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, is one of the best-equipped and is known all over the country for its academics and quality work.
The department was started in 1969 with Dr. Som Nath Gupta as the first Head, under whose dynamic leadership the department grew to glorious heights by acquiring all the latest equipment available in the field at that time for all kinds of ENT investigations and surgeries. After his honourable retirement in 1992, the reins were taken over by Dr. R.S. Grewal until 1996, followed by Dr. A.S. Khurana, and then by Dr. Hemant Chopra. Dr. Manish Munjal took over as head in April 2016 until January 2025.
Presently, the department is headed by Dr. Rohit Verma.
The good work of his predecessors is being carried forward to further glory by adding state-of-the-art equipment every year. The entire faculty is totally dedicated to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. M.S. and D.L.O. courses are duly recognized by the Medical Council of India. The department organizes yearly hands-on workshops as well as Live Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Workshops, which are well-attended and appreciated at the national level.
Special Facilities:
Speech & Hearing Centre
A state-of-the-art speech and hearing centre exists in the department. A dedicated speech therapist, Ms. Shivani Ganju, is very popular with the patients and children who come for speech therapy. The centre is equipped with audiometers, tympanometers, BERA, cribogram group hearing aids.
Neuro-otology Lab
It is located within the OPD premises and is used for special vestibular and facial nerve testing. It is equipped with ENG, optokinetics, air/water calorics, and facial electroneuronography (facial nerve stimulation).
State-of-the-art Microscopes
All kinds of microscopic laryngeal/ear surgeries are performed in the department. A newly acquired video microscope from Zeiss is available for the latest surgeries in otology and laryngology.
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
The latest equipment for endoscopic sinus surgery is available, and the department enjoys the credit of quality surgery in this field. More than a dozen papers have been recognized and awarded at various forums.
Fibreoptics Nasopharyngoscope, laryngoscope for diagnosis, and removal of foreign bodies. Bronchoscope.
Specialty Clinics
Vertigo Clinic: Detailed assessment of cases with vertigo (labyrinthine origin).
Tumour Clinic: Head and neck cancer cases are taken up for comprehensive management and discussion.
Public Health Education
Various camps are held at regular intervals for the detection and prevention of hearing loss, besides treating patients with general ENT ailments.
A patient awareness program for cochlear implants in deaf-mute children was organized in association with PIKA Medicare.
Training
Apart from routine PG teaching, this is the only department in the North West region to train residents on temporal and cadaver dissection.
The residents have the luxury of witnessing live surgery of endoscopic sinus surgery and micro ear surgeries on monitors available in the OT.
Strengths
Latest endoscopic sinus surgery extended to the surgery of the eye, pituitary, CSF leak cases, including micro ear surgeries, microlaryngeal surgeries, neuro-otology, and the Speech & Hearing Centre.
Further Plans
The department is actively considering initiating a Cochlear Implant Programme for deaf/mute children.
